The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has revised fee structure for colleges to obtain accreditation.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has announced a steep increase in the fee structure for colleges to obtain accreditation. The revised fees will come into effect from November 15, 2013.

The Executive Committee of NAAC approved the revised fee structure at its 65th meeting held on October 25. As per the revised fee structure, the registration fee for Letter of Intent (LOI) and Institutional Eligibility for Quality Assessment (IEQA) has been fixed at Rs 25,000. Earlier, affiliated and constituent colleges seekingassessment and accreditation for the first-time had to pay just Rs 2,247.

For universities and professional institutions with up to 10 departments, the fee has been hiked to Rs 3 lakh. For institutions with more than 10 departments, the revised fee is Rs 6 lakh. Before revision, it was just Rs 1 lakh up to four departments and Rs 15,000 for each additional department up to ten departments. For accreditation of more than ten departments, the fee was Rs 1.9 lakh and Rs 10,000 for each additional department.

While the accreditation fee was limited to a maximum of Rs 5 lakh per institution, the cap has now been increased to Rs 6 lakh.

General colleges with multi faculties, including arts, commerce and science have to pay Rs 1,50,000 while general colleges with mono faculty, including Arts / Commerce / Science/or any other and Teacher Education/Physical Education have to pay Rs 1,00,000. Earlier it was Rs 84, 270 and Rs 56, 180 respectively.

However, if LOIs are submitted online on or before November 14, institutions need to pay only the existing IEQA fee. Also, institutions that have cleared Institutional Eligibility for Quality Assessment (IEQA) before November 14 can remit assessment and accreditation fees based on the existing fee structure.

Institutions whose LOI have been accepted and do not need to undergo the IEQA process also can remitassessment and accreditation fees based on the existing fee structure.

The fee hike will be significant in the wake of University Grants Commission (UGC)'s Mandatory Assessmentand Accreditation of Higher Educational Institutions Regulations, which makes it mandatory for institutions to get accreditation within six years of its opening or after two batches pass out.

American university team to visit Delhi, Mumbai to explore collaborations with Indian academic institutions

A high-powered delegation of an eminent American university will visit New Delhi and Mumbai this month to explore possibilities for collaborations with Indian academic institutions and to attract Indian students.

A delegation of the University of Michigan (U-M) led by its president Mary Sue Coleman will be in India from November 13 to 17 to work jointly with Indian educational leaders on solving global issues such as trauma care and sustainable development, a media release said.

They hope to create educational experiences that allow both U-M and Indian students to understand the context within which global challenges must be understood, it said.

"This is a natural extension of the strong partnerships the university has enjoyed in India for many years now," Coleman said.

"Just as we have built upon educational bonds in China, Ghana, South Africa and Brazil in recent years, we look forward to increasing our collaborations in India," she added.

India, which has more people than the US, Europe and Latin America combined, spends more on education than China, Russia or Brazil.

By the next decade, India will have more college graduates than any other country except China - with 12 per cent of the world's total, the university said.

James Holloway, U-M vice-provost for global and engaged education, said the visit will provide an opportunity to build new partnerships and enhance existing ones.

"India offers unique opportunities for our students to engage in global educational experiences that benefit both the people of India and the students who participate there," he said."

The partnerships also will allow Indian students to conduct research at U-M. In Delhi, the university will partner with Ashoka University, the National Council of Applied Economic Research and Delhi University.

The U-M group also will collaborate with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to work on trauma care, cancer research and genetics, the university said.

In Mumbai, Coleman will deliver the keynote address at the India Business Conference, which is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year.
